Brother Bear 2, meanwhile, is one of the aforementioned direct-to-video misfires. And yet it's ultimately as tame and harmless as it is easily dismissed and too quickly forgotten. It lumbers, it growls, it gorges on everything within its reach. It may boast big ideas, a few daring choices and striking imagery, but it also boasts a number of fundamental problems, pawing at meaning and poignancy but never really going in for the kill. ( Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Atlantis: Milo's Return were originally set for March 12th as well but were unceremoniously and indefinitely delayed without explanation.) And, once again, the deluge is another hit or miss affair, with a classic live-action/animation hybrid, three solid (or at least decent) animated features and a near-unbearable batch of direct-to-video misfires.īrother Bear, Disney's 44th animated feature, falls on the "at least decent" end of the spectrum, although the more critical your viewing, the more disgruntled your reaction will be. This year the mois du jour is March, and the releases include Robert Zemeckis's Who Framed Roger Rabbit (the fan-favorite odd man out in the March 12th lineup) and a trio of 2-Movie Collection Blu-rays: The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Hunchback of Notre Dame II, Mulan and Mulan II, and Brother Bear and Brother Bear 2. Last year, it was The Aristocats, The Rescuers, The Rescuers Down Under, Pocahontas, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, The Tigger Movie and Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure, all of which released in a single week in August. Titles like Cinderella and Peter Pan arrive separately and to great fanfare, while other titles shuffle onto shelves en masse, sans the red-carpet treatment afforded their Platinum and Diamond Edition brethren. You'll find no James Woods or Ray Liotta in Liberty City Stories. Voice-over work is not nearly as impressive as the last couple of games in the series. As with the other GTAs, it will take a long, long time to reach 100% completion of Liberty City Stories. Hidden packages and unique jumps are still scattered throughout the city, and boost potential replay value. There are enough new missions to keep hardcore fans busy, and it offers a bit of backstory to those that actually care about the narrative. There's no interactive barbershop, weightlifting minigames, or girlfriend features on this version (and obviously no 'hot coffee' to be found). While Liberty City has definitely changed since 2001, don't expect to see the insane micromanagement that San Andreas introduced. There is one designated save point per island, and Toni can use these to save his game, regain health, and change clothes. The entire property management system from Vice City and San Andreas has been omitted, however. Toni can shoot out tires, snipe drivers, dive out of moving cars, etc. I only wish that missions had more purpose and direction, considering that a large amount of them are menial tasks such as giving people rides or "Assassinate 20 rival gang members!"įortunately, GTA: LCS utilizes almost all of the improvements that GTA: Vice City introduced. This should be business as usual for anyone who has played GTA. Toni will drive to the designated point, receive his instructions, and be on his way to kill some gang members, destroy rival vehicles, or win a race. Your radar will indicate several different story missions, depending on who you're working for at the present time. Liberty City is still divided into three portions, and gameplay is entirely the same. Things take place in 1998, a few years before the events of III, and you can expect to see many familiar faces.įor those that have played the Grand Theft Auto series (I'd assume this includes the large majority of the gaming audience), there's not much new to see here. Instead of the nameless, voiceless wonder we controlled back in 2001, we now have Toni Cipriani (who looks very similar to the old character). The mafia is still a heavy presence, crime runs rampant, and those bridges are still constantly under construction. It's been over four years since gamers were introduced to Liberty City in GTA III, and things haven't changed much. All of the GTA fans that don't own a PSP can now rejoice, as Rockstar has brought the game to the PS2 with some control improvements and a great budget price. While it still has a drought of AAA titles, it had almost nothing worth purchasing during that time period. When it was released for the PSP last fall, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was the killer app for the system. Good: Vice City elements implemented into Liberty City, some fun missionsīad: It's still essentially the same game we've been playing since 2001 This game included "special events" that change daily and need to be completed separately from the normal time management gameplay, as well as a change in how the storyline is displayed: from classic cutscenes to an inclusion during the gameplay instead. On June 3, 2009, the fourth game in the series, Emily's Taste of Fame, was released. Like the first two games in the series, this game was rated 3.5/5 stars by Gamezebo. He helps her get a waiting job at a friend's restaurant so she can earn the money she needs, and through referrals, Emily gets to work at three other restaurants before she finally earns enough money to be able to make her dream come true in the last restaurant, being the tea garden itself. But for this to be achieved, she must apply for a loan at the local bank, for which she needs the aid of Uncle Antonio. In this game, the main storyline is that Emily wants to pursue her dream of running her own tea garden. The game was similar to the second game, its only changes being a greater variety of dishes and reservations, as well as mini-game in which the player collects mice. On September 24, 2008, the third game in the series, Emily's Tea Garden, was released. Like the first game in the series, this game was rated 3.5/5 stars by Gamezebo. The main storyline of the game is as follows: Emily is asked by her Uncle Antonio to help him in his restaurants when his son Marcello runs off and leaves him to run the restaurants by himself. The game also contained five 10-day restaurants to play through, instead of the eight 5-day ones available in the first game of the series. On June 29, 2007, the second game in the series was released with a number of new features compared to the first game, such as options for the player to decorate the restaurant however they want, to put items on their plate ahead of time rather than only directly at the time that the items were ordered by a customer, and the inclusion of trophies along with a storyline with cutscenes. In 2007, the series was nominated for the 2006 Best Casual Game of the Year award. The game was originally rated 3.5/5 stars by Gamezebo. The Winter Edition was similar to the first game, but with a winter/Christmas theme and no achievement trophies. In November of the same year, a special edition of the series was released: The Winter Edition. The first series game, however, did not have much of a storyline, and instead focused on the gameplay. Originally, players were challenged to successfully run eight restaurants that went for five days each. The series was publicly released on September 21, 2006.
With thousands of underground clubs, and the prevalence of jazz bands, liquor-infused partying grew during the “Roaring Twenties,” when the term “dating” – young singles meeting without parental supervision - was first introduced. The already-popular jazz music, and the dances it inspired in speakeasies and clubs, fit into the era’s raucous, party mood. The competition for patrons in speakeasies created a demand for live entertainment. Al Capone, leader of the Chicago Outfit, made an estimated $60 million a year supplying illegal beer and hard liquor to thousands of speakeasies he controlled in the late 1920s. In fact, organized crime in America exploded because of bootlegging. Organized criminals quickly seized on the opportunity to exploit the new lucrative criminal racket of speakeasies and clubs and welcomed women in as patrons. Italian-American speakeasy owners sparked widespread interest in Italian food by serving it with wine. Restaurants offering booze targeted women, uncomfortable sitting at a bar, with table service. No longer segregated from drinking together, men and women reveled in speakeasies and another Prohibition-created venue, the house party. They ranged from fancy clubs with jazz bands and ballroom dance floors to dingy backrooms, basements and rooms inside apartments. The illicit bars, also referred to as “blind pigs” and “gin joints,” multiplied, especially in urban areas. The result of Prohibition was a major and permanent shift in American social life. Another option was to enter private, unlicensed barrooms, nicknamed “speakeasies” for how low you had to speak the “password” to gain entry so as not to be overheard by law enforcement. People wanting to drink had to buy liquor from licensed druggists for “medicinal” purposes, clergymen for “religious” reasons or illegal sellers known as bootleggers. When Prohibition took effect on January 17, 1920, many thousands of formerly legal saloons across the country catering only to men closed down. Speakeasies Were Prohibition’s Worst-Kept Secrets The 2011 film, starring Mia Wasikowska as Jane and Michael Fassbender (Magneto from "X-Men: First Class") as the grumpy yet loveable Mr. Both versions tell the same story, and both leave out or skim over some portions of the book, but their particular changes to the source material lead the two to very different results. The most recent takes on the story came as a 2006 miniseries by the BBC and a 2011 film. "Jane Eyre," Charlotte Brontë's story of the development of an orphan girl's mind and soul, has been adapted several times over the years. This week's novel is a prime example of the differences between a film adaptation and miniseries. Literature buffs have long known the opportunities the little screen can give to book adaptations, as miniseries have been a mainstay on places like the BBC, "Masterpiece Theatre" and the like. Currently, the lengthy "Game of Thrones" fantasy novels are seeing tremendous success on HBO. Though feature-length films can often prove too short to give the book justice, TV gives viewers a chance to see their favorite classics in a more accurate and insightful light. The material also tends to be dense with subtext and second meanings that don't really translate off the written page. Many times, the reason is simple: It's tough to get everything from a 500-page book into even a two-and-a-half-hour movie. When a piece of classic literature is adapted to the big screen, the resulting film just about always fails to capture the full impact of its source material.
